Fabio Capello is considering a return to the much-maligned central midfield pairing of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on Saturday (October 11th), new reports suggest.
According to the Daily Mail, Capello will play the two in a Thursday practice game with a view to fielding them for the Wembley fixture.
The news comes despite Gareth Barry’s impressive showing in the 4-1 win away to Croatia last month.
Meanwhile, fitness doubts have been cast over John Terry, Ashley Cole, Wes Brown and Stewart Downing, who all missed training today (Wednesday, October 7th).
Terry injured his back during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend.
Kazakhstan, who will play in front of a full house at ‘The Home of Football’, look likely to field a younger, new-look side against hosts after long-serving goalkeeper David Loria and captain Nurbol Zhumaskaliev were dropped by caretaker manager Bernd Storck.
The central Asians are currently ranked 120th in the FIFA world rankings - 105 places below England in 15th.
