Liverpool produce stunning comeback to beat Manchester City
Liverpool kept up the pressure on Chelsea on the top of the Premiership log on the weekend, coming back from 2 goals down to consign Manchester City to their 3rd Premier League defeat in four matches.
It was the Manchester City players who went into the match with guns blazing, with Stephen Ireland scoring his club’s first goal on 19 minutes. City struck again through Javier Garrido 3 minutes before time, to head into the break with a commanding lead.
However, it was all about Liverpool in the second half, as Fernando Torres evaded the attentions of his Manchester City markers to score on the 55th minute before putting away the equaliser on 73 minutes. With both teams down to ten men and time running out, Dirk Kuyt produced the winner for Liverpool in injury time.
“I’m really pleased with the result,” Benítez said after the match. “The positive thing was the reaction of the players after a bad first half. We made two mistakes for both goals, but the reaction and character we showed in the second half was key to winning the game.”
