Texan businessman buys Sunderland
Sunderland is set to become the latest Premier League club to relinquish ownership to an American investor.
According to the English Premier League managing body Texan businessman Ellish Short took control of 30% of the shares of the Drumaville consortium that owns Sunderland in August. Short is the co-founder of the Dallas based Lone Star Funds private equity group.
Short’s stake makes him the majority owner of Sunderland, something not all fans will be happy with, particularly given the fact that a warrant for the Texan’s arrest has been issued in Korea in connection with stock manipulation and tax evasion.
“Sunderland AFC is unable to comment on any matters relating to the Drumaville Consortium or investment in the club except to thank them for their continued support,” a Sunderland representative said when contacted by the Associated Press.
Should Short’s purchase of Sunderland shares via the Drumaville consortium go unchallenged, Sunderland will become the fourth Premier League club owned by an American, along with Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa.
