Newcastle look for cup run to ease crisis
Chris Hughton, Newcastle United’s caretaker manager, has stressed his side will be treating the Carling Cup as an important competition ahead of their match with defending champions Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 24th).
The departure of former boss Kevin Keegan and owner Mike Ashley’s mission to sell the club have made for uncertain times on Tyneside of late.
But Hughton, who has presided over two league defeats since Keegan left the club, is intent on lifting the spirits of his squad with a win at home to Spurs.
“It’s a great opportunity, particularly with the way some clubs have approached the cup,” he told the BBC.
“We as a club cannot afford to approach this game in the wrong way. It’s a game we need to win and of course the team selection will show that.”
Obafemi Martins is available for selection, but Danny Guthrie and Joey Barton are suspended, while Jose Enrique, Habib Beye, Mark Viduka and Jonas Gutierrez are all out.
A Spurs boss Sergio Ramos may field Roman Pavyluchenko, who was withdrawn at half-time in the match with Wigan over the weekend is still to net following a move from Spartak Moscow.
Newcastle, who are one place above bottom club Spurs in the Premier League table, got as far as the third round of the competition last season, losing to Arsenal 2-0.
