Joe Cole looks being handed a first team berth for England’s World Cup qualifier with Croatia on Wednesday (September 10th).

Cole scored two from the bench in England’s 2-0 win over Andorra at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday (September 6th).

Now the Chelsea midfielder is being tipped to start on the left side of midfield in place of Stuart Downing, who did little to convince boss Fabio Capello of his ability to feed England’s strikers in a goalless first half.

A thoughtful Capello commented: “I have got to think about Joe. He is very good for himself at the moment and very good for us.

“But I have to decide what the first 11 will be against Croatia. It will be another game - and it will a different sort of game.”

Croatia come into the game on the back of a resounding 3-0 win over Kazakhstan in their opening fixture.
