Scotland squad depleted for Macedonia match
Scotland will take a weakened squad to their opening World Cup Qualifying Group Nine fixture with Macedonia on Saturday (September 6th).
The withdrawals of defender Kevin McNaughton and midfielders Callum Davidson and Kevin Thomson have put further on strain on a group already deprived of the talents of David Marshall, David Weir and Garry O’Connor, who have pulled out.
Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart is a late replacement, joining fellow emergency call-ups Jamie Langfield and Kirk Broadfoot.
The Tartan Army’s injury woes have prompted boss George Burley to give the Macedonians - who pulled off a 0-0 draw against England at Old Trafford in a Euro 2008 qualifier - the tag of favourites ahead of the fixture.
He commented: “I think Macedonia are favourites. But favourites on paper doesn’t always mean anything. It’s what happens over those 90 minutes that count.
“We’ve got to go there and give it our best shot.”
