Liege boss wary of deadly duo
Laszlo Boloni, the manager of tonight’s (Wednesday, August 27th) Anfield visitors Standard Liege, has singled out midfielder Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres as Liverpool’s dangermen ahead of the team’s Champions League third qualifying round second leg.
The tie - the winner of which goes through to the group stages of Europe’s premier club competition - is evenly poised after a 0-0 draw in Belgium two weeks ago.
And despite Liverpool’s £20 million signing of Robbie Keane, Liege boss Boloni still believes the understanding and intuitiveness possessed by the Gerrard and Torres combination will give his side the most worries.
”What does concern me is the relationship that Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard have achieved,” he told ESPN.
Continuing: ”They are two fine players and have a fine link, something they have struck up very quickly as players. It is very important to Liverpool, they know each other’s game very well.”
Liverpool will be without Lucas and Javier Mashcerano after the South Americans represented their countries at the Olympics, while Sami Hyypia still has a hamstring injury.
