Keegan: Carling Cup is silverware chance
Kevin Keegan has admitted that Newcastle United’s Carling Cup campaign, starting tonight (Tuesday, August 26th) away to Coventry City, is one of the club’s best chances of winning some silverware this season.
The Newcastle manager gave a frank assessment of his team’s prospects for the coming season, placing importance on enjoying a good cup run.
He told the BBC: “My feeling is and always has been that the best chance we’ve got of winning something is a Carling Cup or an FA Cup.
“Providing I’m not risking players, I’ll put out as strong a team as I can against Coventry because I think that’s what the competition asks you to do.”
The Magpies’ forward department will be stretched after Obafemi Martins was ruled out of the tie after coming off injured in the 1-0 win over Bolton last weekend.
Michael Owen and Alan Smith are not fully fit, while Mark Viduka is still nursing an Achilles injury.
Coventry will be without Freddie Eastwood, who has a groin strain, but are likely to field Michael ‘the mosquito’ Misfud, whose two goals knocked Manchester United out of the competition last season.
