Terry handed back England captaincy
John Terry has been named as the permanent England captain after manager Fabio Capello opted to reinstall the Chelsea defender in the role.
Rio Ferdinand was thought to be Capello’s most likely choice, but the Italian tactician revealed at an FA press conference that it was Terry’s “big personality” which made him the right man for the job.
“Rio, when he was captain, played very well - the same level as John,” said Capello, who made Ferdinand vice-captain. “It was not easy for me to choose, because they are very good players”.
“The big personality of John was the reason I chose John but Rio is very important to the team,” he added.
Terry, who has won 44 England caps, said that being captain “means the world to me” and added that “to get the armband back is a huge achievement”.
On Wednesday (August 20th), Terry will lead England out in a friendly with the Czech Republic at Wembley which will be the final game before the World Cup qualifiers get under way next month.
