Magpies prepare for United test
Newcastle United took the unusual step of inviting their fans to watch a training session in the run-up to Sunday’s (August 17th) Premier League opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Over 12,000 supporters piled into St James’ Park to see Kevin Keegan’s men being put through their paces on Wednesday (August 13th).

Two notable absentees were expected new signing Fabricio Coliccini, whose £10 million move from Deportivo La Coruna has just been finalised and midfielder Joey Barton, who faces a 15-game ban after admitting an FA charge of violent conduct.

“Today is about seeing Newcastle United supporters with smiles on their faces,” former Newcastle defender John Beresford told the city’s Evening Chronicle newspaper.

He went on: “Newcastle is a special club and this gives the fans a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes.”

Captain Michael Owen did perform some light sprinting exercises in front of the Geordie faithful, but is not expected to figure, with strike partner Mark Viduka also out injured.

Meanwhile, United’s Wayne Rooney has recovered sufficiently from a virus to be in contention for a starting spot.ADNFCR-1078-ID-18735309-ADNFCR
