Villa shore up backline
Aston Villa have moved to shore up their defence ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Villa, who kick off their campaign with a home match against Manchester City next weekend, were left with a hole to fill after Dutchman Wilfred Bouma broke his ankle an Intertoto Cup tie.
Now Villa have moved for England international full-backs Luke Young and Nicky Shorey.
Left-back Shorey arrives from Reading for an undisclosed fee, while right-back Young is expected to cost more than the £2.5 million which Middlesbrough paid for him in 2007.
On completion of the Shorey transfer, Villa boss Martin O’Neill commented: “Nicky is a quality natural left-back who played for England 18 months ago.
“Obviously the injury to Freddie (Bouma) has left a gaping hole on the left. Freddie had a wonderful season for us last year and this wasn’t necessarily a priority for us before the injury.”
