Gerrard’s Euro qualifier scare
Liverpool are facing up to the prospect of being without captain Steven Gerrard for their make-or-break Champions League third round qualifying tie against Standard Liege.
Gerrard went off with a suspected groin injury during the Reds 4-1 win over Norwegian side Valerenga in Oslo.
Xabi Alonso, Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and new French striker David Ngog got on the scoresheet but Gerrard limped off injured after 27 minutes.
Post-match, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez revealed that rather than being a recurrence of a groin strain, Gerrard had in fact injured his thigh and was now a doubt for the European tie, which could see Liverpool be given a £10 million passport into the lucrative Champions League group stages.
The Spanish manager confirmed: “It is a thigh strain. We need to wait but it could be one week.”
Liverpool are still reported to be interested in Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry - the Birmingham club had rejected an initial bid for the player.
