Gutierrez is first Keegan signing
Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has plumped for an exotic choice first signing in the run-up to the new Premier League season.
The capture of Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez from Real Mallorca represents an opening foray into the transfer market for Keegan since starting his second reign at St James’ Park.
Nicknamed ‘Spiderman’, due to his extravagant goal celebrations which involve pulling on a mask of the comic superhero, Gutierrez has been capped twice for his country.
The 24-year-old played in the 0-0 draw with Brazil in Mineirao - the World Cup 2010 qualifier was his first match for Argentina since his debut back in 2007.
He commented: “I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining Newcastle United.
“The Premier League is a great place to play and I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and prove myself to the Newcastle United fans.”
